  1. Convert each letter grade to a grade point. An A is 4.0, a B is 3.0, and so on down the scale in the next section.
  2. Multiply the grade point by the course’s credit hours. This gives you the quality points for that course. A 3-credit B is 3.0 times 3, or 9 quality points.
  3. Add up the quality points from every course.
  4. Divide that total by the total credit hours you took.

How do you calculate a semester GPA? A worked example

That single letter is worth a tenth of a point because psychology carried real credits. How do you calculate your cumulative GPA?

Here’s where most people make a mistake that costs them tenths of a point. Your cumulative GPA covers every course across every term, and you cannot get it by averaging your semester GPAs. You have to go back to quality points and total credits.

Why does averaging fail? Because terms carry different credit loads, and a plain average treats a 3-credit term and an 18-credit term as equals. Watch what happens with two lopsided terms:

Two students can earn identical letters and report different GPAs, and this is why. An unweighted GPA caps every course at 4.0 regardless of difficulty. A weighted GPA adds a bump for tougher classes:

How do retakes affect your GPA?

Retaking a course can help, but how much depends entirely on your school’s policy. There are two common systems, and they treat that old grade very differently:

The gap between them is bigger than it sounds. Picture retaking a 3-credit course where you first earned an F (0 quality points) and the second time earned an A (12 quality points). Under grade replacement, the F drops out of the calculation entirely, so it’s as if you’d scored the A on the first try. Under grade averaging, both attempts stay in: you’ve now got 6 credits attempted contributing 12 quality points, which averages to a 2.0 for that pair.

So before you assume a retake will rescue your average, read the registrar’s policy on repeated courses. Check whether replacement is automatic or something you have to request, and whether there’s a cap on how many times it applies. Financial aid rules can also limit how often a repeated course counts toward your enrollment, so a retake that fixes your GPA might not count for your aid status.
