The systems

How do shoe size systems compare?

The three big systems measure the same foot in different ways. US and UK sizes step in barleycorns, a third of an inch each, but they start from different baselines, so a men's US 9 is a UK 8.5 and an EU 42.5. The EU system counts Paris points, two thirds of a centimeter, which is why those numbers look so much larger.

Because each maker cuts its shoes a little differently, the surest anchor is your actual foot length in centimeters. Measure heel to longest toe, match it to the chart, and you've got a size that travels across brands and countries. That's why this converter shows the cm length right alongside every size number.

Measuring

How to measure your foot at home

Put a sheet of paper on the floor against a wall, stand with your heel touching the wall, and mark where your longest toe ends. Measure that distance in centimeters, and that's the number to match against the chart. Do it in the late afternoon, when feet swell to their largest, and measure both feet, since most people have one slightly longer. Use the bigger foot. If you'll wear thick socks, add a couple of millimeters. The Length Converter turns inches into centimeters if your ruler is imperial, and the Temperature Converter is handy for the rest of your overseas shopping.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I size up or down between systems?

Convert to the nearest size first, then lean on fit. If your converted size falls between two numbers, sizing up is usually safer than squeezing into the smaller one, especially for athletic shoes worn with thicker socks. For dress shoes that stretch a little, the exact converted size often works. When in doubt, the foot-length chart is the most reliable guide.

Each region scales sizing differently. US and UK sizes both use a barleycorn step of one third of an inch, but they start from different points, so a US men's size is about half a size larger than the UK number. Europe uses Paris points, roughly two thirds of a centimeter, which makes EU numbers look much bigger. This converter lines them all up for you.

For men, a US size runs about 0.5 larger than the UK size, so a US 9 is a UK 8.5. For women the gap is bigger, around 2 to 2.5 sizes, so a US women's 8 is roughly a UK 6. They share the same step size; they just start counting from a different zero point. Always check the system before you order.

Stand on a sheet of paper with your heel against a wall, then mark the tip of your longest toe and measure the distance in centimeters. Do it late in the day, when your feet are at their largest, and measure both feet since they often differ. Use the longer foot, and match the length to the chart to find your size.

Divide the gap roughly: an EU men's size is about the US size plus 33, so EU 42 is near a US 9. For women, EU is about the US size plus 30.5, so EU 39 is near a US 8.5. These are close guides, but brands vary, so use the converter and the foot-length chart together for the best fit.

No. A given foot length maps to a different number on the men's and women's scales, with women's US sizes running about 1.5 larger than men's for the same foot. That's why this tool asks whether you want men's, women's, or kids' sizing before it converts. Pick the right mode and the numbers will line up with the shoe you're buying.

Sizing charts are a guide, not a guarantee. Each brand uses its own lasts, the molds that shape a shoe, so the same labeled size can fit differently from one maker to the next. Athletic, dress, and boot styles also run differently. Treat the converted size as a starting point, then check the brand's own chart and reviews.
