Final Grade Calculator
This final grade calculator shows the exact score you need on the final exam to hit your target grade. Type your current grade, how much the final is worth, and the grade you're after, and you'll see the number to aim for. It'll tell you if the goal isn't reachable, and the second box flips it around: enter a final score and it shows where you'd land overall. It's free, private, and live as you type.

What grade do I need on the final?
Your course grade is the work you've already done plus the final, each scaled by how much it counts. If the final is worth 30 percent, everything else covers the other 70. To hit a target, you rearrange that: subtract your current grade times the 70 percent from your goal, then divide by the 30 percent the final carries. With an 88 percent going in and a 90 percent target, that's (90 minus 61.6) over 0.30, which lands at about 94.7 percent. This final grade calculator does the rearranging for you, and it warns you when the answer climbs past 100, because then the goal isn't reachable on the final by itself.
Working out the score, step by step
Here's an 88 percent current grade, a final worth 30 percent, and a 90 percent target. It's the same path the tool runs:
- 1
Split the weightThe final is worth 30 percent, so the rest of the course counts for 70 percent.
- 2
Bank what you have88 percent times 0.70 is 61.6 points already locked in toward the grade.
- 3
Find the gapYour 90 percent target minus 61.6 leaves 28.4 points the final has to cover.
- 4
Divide by the weight28.4 divided by 0.30 is about 94.7 percent, the score you need.
Score needed at a glance
Here's the final score needed to reach a 90 percent target, from an 88 percent current grade, as the final's weight changes. A heavier final asks less of a swing, since it carries more of the grade.
| Final weight | Need for a 90 | Reachable? |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 108% | No |
| 20% | 98% | Yes |
| 30% | 94.7% | Yes |
| 40% | 93% | Yes |

Frequently asked questions
Take your target grade, subtract your current grade times the share the final doesn't count for, then divide by the final's weight. With an 88 percent going in, a final worth 30 percent, and a 90 percent goal, you'd need about 94.7 percent on the final. This final grade calculator runs that for you, so you'll see the exact score to aim for the moment you type your numbers.
Your course grade is the work so far plus the final, each scaled by its weight. If the final is worth w, the rest counts for 1 minus w, so the needed final score is (target minus current times (1 minus w)) divided by w. The tool handles the arithmetic, and it flags when the number lands above 100, which means the target isn't reachable on the final alone.
Then your goal is out of reach with a standard final, since you can't score above full marks. The tool shows the most you can finish with, which is your current grade times the non-final share plus 100 times the final's weight. From there you'd either adjust the target, ask about extra credit, or aim for the highest grade the math still allows.
Multiply your final score by its weight, add your current grade times the rest, and that's your course grade. So an 88 percent with a 95 on a final worth 30 percent gives 88 times 0.7 plus 95 times 0.3, which is 90.1 percent. The second box does this, so you'll see where any final score lands you overall.
Sometimes, if your current grade is high and the final is light. The lowest you can finish with, even scoring zero on the final, is your current grade times the share the final doesn't cover. If that floor is already at or above your target, the tool says you've secured it, though most schools still expect you to sit the exam.
Yes to both. There's no sign-up, no limit, and nothing to install, since it runs in your browser. The grades and weights you type stay on your device and aren't sent anywhere. Bookmark it before exam season and you'll have a fast way to see exactly what each final is asking of you.
