How do I calculate a tip?
A tip is just a percentage of the bill, so you multiply the check by the rate written as a decimal. Eighteen percent is the bill times 0.18, so a $50 check comes to a 9 dollar tip and a 59 dollar total. Splitting is one more step: add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people, so that 59 dollars across two diners is 29.50 each. How to calculate a tip in your head
You don't always need a calculator to land close. Start with 10 percent, which is just the bill with the decimal moved one place to the left, so on a $46 check, 10 percent is $4.60. From that one number the rest is quick:
- 20% tip: double the 10 percent figure, so $4.60 becomes $9.20.
- 15% tip: take the 10 percent and add half of it, so $4.60 plus $2.30 is $6.90.
- 18% tip: a touch under 20 percent, so knock a little off the doubled number, roughly $8.30.
- 25% tip: the 20 percent plus another half of the 10 percent, so $9.20 plus $2.30 is $11.50.
