Pace Calculator

This pace calculator solves for whichever piece you're missing. Give it a distance and a time and you'll get your pace; give it a distance and a pace and you'll get the finish time; give it a pace and a time and you'll get the distance. It works in miles or kilometers, shows your speed, and lays out what that pace means for a 5K, 10K, half, and marathon. It's free, you won't need an account, and it runs in your browser, so planning a run takes seconds. You'll see the numbers the moment you type.

Estimates only, not medical advice. Pace figures help you plan training; talk with a coach or doctor for guidance that fits you.

How do you calculate running pace?

Pace ties together three numbers: distance, time, and the pace itself, which is time per unit of distance. Pin down any two and the third follows. Pace is time divided by distance, so a 40-minute 5-mile run is 8 minutes per mile. Finish time is pace times distance, so holding 8 minutes per mile for 13.11 miles takes about 1 hour 45 minutes. Distance is time divided by pace, so 45 minutes at 9 minutes per mile covers 5 miles. This tool runs whichever of those you need, converts cleanly between miles and kilometers, and turns your pace into a speed and a set of race-time equivalents, so one run tells you what to expect across the standard distances. You don't have to juggle the unit math, and you won't lose the seconds to rounding, since it's all handled for you. That's the part that's fiddly when you're doing it on a notepad after a run.

Frequently asked questions

You fill in two of the three pieces, distance, time, and pace, and it solves for the one you left out. Set a distance and a finish time and it gives your pace per mile or kilometer; set a distance and a pace and it gives the finish time; set a pace and a time and it gives the distance. It also shows your speed and what that pace would mean across the common race distances, so you'll see the full picture in one go.

Pace is your time divided by your distance, expressed as minutes and seconds per mile or kilometer. If you run 5 miles in 40 minutes, that's 40 divided by 5, which is 8 minutes per mile. This tool does that split for you and keeps the seconds tidy, so you don't end up with awkward decimals. Switch the unit toggle and it recalculates in kilometers without you re-entering anything.

It depends on your goal and experience, so there's no single right number. A brisk walk is around 15 to 20 minutes per mile, an easy jog often sits near 10 to 12, and many recreational runners race somewhere between 7 and 10 minutes per mile. Rather than chase someone else's pace, use this tool to track your own over time and set realistic targets for your next run.

Because a mile is longer than a kilometer, your per-mile pace is a bigger number than your per-kilometer pace. To go from per mile to per kilometer you divide by about 1.609, and you multiply to go the other way. You don't have to do that by hand here: flip the unit toggle and the calculator re-runs everything, so your pace, time, and the race equivalents all switch units together.

A half marathon is 13.11 miles, so finishing in under 2 hours means averaging just under 9:09 per mile, or about 5:41 per kilometer. Set the distance to a half and the time to 1:59:00 and the tool shows the exact pace, and the race-equivalent panel works the same trick for any target. It's a quick way to turn a goal time into the pace you'll need to hold.

Yes, it's completely free, with no sign-up, and it runs right in your browser, so nothing you enter leaves your device. Solve for pace, time, or distance, switch units, and read the race equivalents in a tap. Bookmark it for training runs, race planning, or treadmill workouts, and remember the figures are estimates to guide your training, not medical or coaching advice.
