Think of BMR as the engine idling and TDEE as the engine driving. Your BMR is fixed for the day, but your TDEE rises the more you move.

How TDEE is built from BMR

TDEE is just your BMR multiplied by an activity factor. That factor accounts for everything you do on top of resting: walking, working, exercising, even digesting food. Here are the standard multipliers.

So if your BMR is 1,500 and you’re moderately active, your TDEE is 1,500 x 1.55, which is about 2,325 calories a day. That’s your maintenance level.

What actually makes up your TDEE

The activity multiplier is a shortcut for four separate things your body spends energy on. Knowing them helps you see why an honest activity level matters so much.

The surprise for most people is that NEAT, all the everyday movement that isn’t exercise, often burns more than workouts do. Someone on their feet all day has a much higher TDEE than a desk worker who hits the gym three times a week, even if the gym-goer trains harder. That’s why a warehouse job and an office job land on different multipliers, and it’s why picking your activity level honestly beats guessing high.

A worked example

Let’s use a BMR of 1,600 calories and see how much the activity level changes things.

Look at the spread: the same person burns 1,920 or 3,040 calories depending only on how active they are. That’s why picking your activity level honestly matters more than obsessing over the BMR formula itself.

Which one to use for your goal

Once you’ve got your TDEE, your goal decides the target.

  • Maintain weight: eat around your TDEE.
  • Lose weight: eat 300 to 500 calories below TDEE for steady, sustainable loss.
  • Gain weight or muscle: eat 250 to 500 calories above TDEE.

Notice that BMR sets a floor. Dropping below your BMR for a long time is usually a mistake, because it’s the minimum energy your body needs, and very low intake can backfire by slowing your metabolism.
