The gap between the two is why “5 business days” and “5 days” feel so different. One is a work week, the other is less than a week.
Why 5 business days isn’t 5 days
Say something ships in 5 business days and you order on a Monday. The five working days are Monday through Friday, so it arrives the following Monday, which is 7 calendar days later. Order on a Wednesday instead and the five business days run Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, then Monday and Tuesday, landing 7 calendar days out again once the weekend is skipped.
Add a public holiday in the middle and it stretches to 8 calendar days, because that holiday doesn’t count as a business day. This is why a “3 to 5 business day” estimate can quietly become a week and a half around a long weekend.
How to count business days between two dates
The method is a quick three-step subtraction.
- Count the total calendar days between the two dates.
- Subtract the weekend days (every Saturday and Sunday in the span).
- Subtract any public holidays that fall on a weekday.
